The atmosphere in the darkroom chilled. The temperature dropped and water droplets froze in the air. Marty remained oblivious, he was too preoccupied with enhancing the images on the screen. Something was going on with the village. They had to be hiding something! Marty hit print and waited. Line by line Marty watched the image take shape. With a final buzz, the picture dropped onto the printer’s paper tray.
Marty directed his adjustable lamp towards the image and sat back in his chair. He sipped a glass of water, peered closely and sucked his lip. A mutated shape remained on the surface of the ocean where the three women dived. Marty glanced at the second image. The second woman had the same disfigurement. He thoughtfully took another sip and frowned. Ice had formed on the surface. “Weird!”
He arranged the images next to each other and smiled to himself. “I could make millions!”
Ice crackled in the glass, his breath froze and goose-pimples prickled his neck. A pale blue flame emerged from the images. Marty lunged forwards and stamped them out. A ball of blue flame manifested in the air, within the fire stood a woman with red curls dressed in black.
He froze to the spot. She stared him in the eye and reached out for him. Marty stepped backwards and knocked the glass. Water splashed across the floor. She was gone.
The water crystallised into ice, “You’re still here aren’t you?” he said, his voice taught. His computer screen lit up. “Shit!” He glanced at the door, “It happened when I said I could make millions…” Carefully he sidestepped the ice as he backed towards the door. “So whatever you are, you don’t want this getting out do you?”
The computer screen flickered. “You’re something to do with them, aren’t you?”
The small hairs bristled on the back of Marty’s neck. A cool breeze caressed his cheek but there was nothing there.
“You don’t want to hurt me, do you? If that was your intention, you would have attacked by now. I know you’re trying to tell me something – but what?”
The computer screen flashed again. Marty took a step forwards.
“Just write what you need to tell me… then I will know,” whispered Marty.
“Are you intending to harm us?”
Marty focused on the screen. The sound of cracking filled the air as ice crystallised and cool air wafted about him.
“Do you want us here?” he said a little louder. The pool of water melted, re-structured and cracked into an abstract form. The cool air ruffled his eyelashes. She was standing directly in front him. His stomach flipped, he had to leave!
“I understand this is secret. Do you want me to show these images to anyone?”
Ice appeared in the air and tinkled to the ground. A shudder ran down his spine. Her cold breath panted in his face. Marty’s eyes remained fixed on the screen. “Are you connected with the creatures?”
His heart pounded. A frozen pair of hands appeared in the air and glided towards the computer.
“Are you – are you – one of them?” he croaked.
The computer screen flashed.
“Oh God!” Marty’s heart thumped. He took two steps backwards. “But you are protecting them… Who are you protecting them from?”
There was no flash on the screen – just silence. He frowned as he took another step towards the door. “Is something going to happen with them, concerning me?”
On the landing Johnny stood at the top of the stairs fidgeting. Was Marty still in the darkroom? In a slump of boredom he plodded down the stairs towards the darkroom and put his ear to the wall. Who was Marty talking to?
Inside the darkroom the frosty draft swirled and intensified.
“That article – it’s you – isn’t it – answer me!”
“Answer me… I don’t get it! Who are you trying to protect?”
The computer flashed on. The chilled air spiralled. Marty’s heart pounded. “Who are you protecting?”
‘YOU’ it wrote. ‘DEATH WILL COME!’
A wave of nausea washed through him. His solar plexus knotted and a deep, dark sound rose within him. Whatever was in that room had touched his soul! He had to go. He launched himself towards the door but a blue flame rose, the water melted and droplets suspended in his path. The wall of ice revealed a woman consumed in flames.
“You are here for a reason!” said a cold rasping voice. “You can stop the killing! You can stop the pattern!”
Marty smashed through the ice with his arms protecting his face. He skidded and slid in the direction of the door, grabbed the handle, forced it down and catapulted himself into the corridor.
Smack! Johnny was standing directly in his path and the pair crashed to the floor. Laying on his side, Marty clutched his chest and panted.
“What was all that about Marty? And who were yer talking to?”
“Not now okay? Myself,” said Marty.
“You were talking to IT, weren’t you?”
Marty remained silent.
“Don’t deny it – will you? I heard yer clear as day,” said Johnny “And I think I heard her too.”
Marty shook his head and clutched his chest.
“That’s too weird, that’s just too fricken’ weird! Yer hear?” said Johnny. “You were having a conversation with a ghost. That’s madness Marty, nothing more, nothing less – mad!”
Johnny Boy clambered to his feet and went to walk away but paused.
“Johnny what can I say? It’s just weird!”
“More than weird! We need this sorted… We will get the priest in. In the meantime, we all need a break from the house. Let’s get our arses to the cove,” said Johnny trying to lighten the atmosphere. “Get some stuff, we’ll have a fire – it’ll be nice and safe there. Then we can talk Marty. There will nort be any ghosts ear-wiggin.”
“Johnny can we change the subject? Actually, where are Danny and Shana?”
“Sucking each other’s faces off,” said Johnny in a certain tone.
“You knew? You bloody knew and did ney tell me? I almost made an arse of myself Marty!”
“Yeh, it was obvious. I worked it out today,” said Marty honestly.
“Just my luck,” said Johnny folding his arms. “An attractive girl with a brain, a sense of humour who can surf… How often do you get those?”
“Shana is unique,” said Marty.
“Yeh, she’s not like the others.”
“I know I’ve lost out this time but you know I’m a fanny magnet Marty,” he said.
Marty cracked a smile; he had such a way with words!
“I’m just saying it how it is. And I AM a magnet. Who can help that? It’s just the better ones are at the top of the tree and need chasing. That is why I wear the Speedos Marty. Like bees to a honey pot,” said Johnny with a sigh. “You should get some Marty – they work, I promise!”
Marty gazed at his friend, he was not willing to wear small red trunks to meet women whether it worked or not.
“Johnny what are we going to do about the ‘entity’ then?”
Johnny shrugged “I think avoidance is the best tactic and talking about totty is the best distraction I can think of.”
Marty studied his friend, at some point a person had to confront the truth. The truth was an entity had told him he was there for a reason and that reason would stop death. How could he tell his friend that?
