CHAPTER 19
THE SURPRISE AND THE DISGUISE DELIVERED AT SUNRISE
The following morning Jenny woke up and stretched, it felt as though the previous night’s experience had been a dream. She glanced down beside the bed and saw she had mud on her new dance shoes. When she sat up all her muscles ached. A shock of realisation shot through her, she quickly scurried down the stairs and saw there were muddy footprints on the kitchen floor. She quickly grabbed a cloth and wiped the lino. A moment later she had another realisation, she had left her glowing light running shoes behind. She gasped; in all the excitement she had left her shoes at the Monster Pit.
Her parents would go ballistic! How could she explain? Silently she unlocked the door and considered whether she could get to the pit and back before her parents woke up. As she made her way to the back fence she paused and smiled. Her tricycle basket was full. She went over and found four envelopes with A-Mystery 1, 2, 3 & 4 written on them. Under the envelopes a paper bag with her light-emitting training shoes sat all nicely sealed. She then noticed the two parts of the split monster costume carefully folded beside her tricycle. Jenny glanced around and noticed one of the trees by their fence had more lichen on than usual. ‘Gnasher?’ Jenny whispered.
Gnasher turned his head, winked and then rustled through a bush and disappeared. One of the sheets on the washing line lifted into the air.
‘Ghostly?’
A face appeared in the sheet then disappeared. Jenny stood smiling to herself. Monsters were masters of disguise and would only allow certain people to see them. Although, if they were on a scaring mission then maybe that was a different matter. Jenny picked up the prizes and her shoes. She came to a sudden halt. ‘They must have known. They must have seen the costume being hidden…’ She whispered, paused and turned. A hedge parted and a shape rustled through. From within the forest there was a huge ‘Roar’.
